remains of Amun Temple at Soleb, Sudan
The remains were not as extensive as Egypt, but many had carvings in a better state of preservation.

Nile crocodile
The crocodiles that we saw were not as big as their counterparts in Australia.

filleting fish in the sun at Dongola market Sudan
I found it incredible that they would carry out this activity not only in the hot sun but on the sandy ground.

Amphorae were used to hold water, often in streets, throughout Sudan.

long-horned cattle
Previously, I had only seen such cattle in Fort Worth, America.Add caption

beautiful ripe produce
I have frequently commented that produce in less industrialised countries is picked at optimum time for flavour and freshness.
Dervish ceremony at the Hamad al Nil Cemetery in Omdurman, Sudan. I was met with curious faces everywhere.

An introduction to fascinating Sudan

tea lady in the Khartoum bazaar
Many such ladies were thus employed in the streets of Khartoum.

There were  white camels here, which I had never encountered before.

Dubai Miracle Garden

Massed floral displays and swans, topiary, fairy-tale houses, castles, arches and even a full-sized Emirates aeroplane all created with flowers. Indeed a miracle in this desert environment.

Tables and chairs shaded by a tunnel of colourful umbrellas.

the ultimate snowy peak
I have used this awesome picture taken in Pakistan for the cover photograph on my Facebook page.

the ‘tale’ of a yak
This picture requires no further explanation.

more chickens with a pile of feet on the counter
The feet were sold as a separate commodity.

unloading chickens – none too gently
The highly decorated trucks were symbolic of Pakistan.

original woodwork in Baltit Fort
The fort, in the Hunza Valley in northern Pakistan, dates from the eighth century AD.

lady bearing a load of kindling
Although only kindling, this load would have been heavy and was carried far.
prehistoric rock art at Haldeiksh Pakistan
The drawings were very elementary, the attraction was in their great age.

The following pictures conclude my series on Pakistan. Many more will appear in book 8.

butchering in the street
I witnessed this activity in one of the towns en route to Hunza.

carrots for sale
This picture appealed to me for the colour and unusual subject matter.

selling the meat (and heads) of yaks
People often wondered why I took photographs of what they considered commonplace items.

colourful houses in Shandur Pass

A feature of this area, gaily decorated houses added colour to the drab surroundings and frozen lake.

Living conditions at the top of the pass were harsh; even washing reflected the dull environs, and there appeared to be little fodder for the cattle.

more pictures from Pakistan

stark mountains through the cracked windscreen
The barren mountains often displayed a wealth of colour.

a glimpse of the stunning scenery
Except for the wires, this scene had everything: snow-capped mountains, autumn foliage, and a rustic bridge crossing the glorious blue Mastuj River.

typical cluttered shop and a congested corner in the mountain town of Chitral, Pakistan

Every conceivable item, from hardware to high fashion, was for sale in the markets; I even saw shoes made of silver.

Often appearing chaotic, most things worked with precision, and the colour was almost overwhelming.

I am concluding my pictures from book 2 with a pretty wide-eyed girl and a series of engrossing scenes taken in the fetish market of Togo, West Africa

there were heads and horns of all shapes and sizes
